NAMRU-3 is the oldest overseas military medical research facility and one of the largest research laboratories in the North Africa-Middle East region. The laboratory traces its origins to 1942, when America military scientist and technician began working with Egyptian physician at Abbassia Fever Hospital, Cairo, Egypt under the auspices of the United States of America Typhus Commission, established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Following World War II, the Egyptian Government invited the U.S Navy to continue collaborative studies of endemic tropical and subtropical diseases with Egyptian scientist. NAMRU-3 was formally established in 1946, and the laboratory has been in continuous operation despite periods of political tension and a seven-year lapse in U.S-Egyptian relations (1967-1973)
