WHAT IS A SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICER?

The School Liaison Officer works in conjunction with the Child and Youth Program and the local school community to address educational issues involving military children.  Through partnering with the local and military community, the School Liaison Officer uses a variety of resources to provide assistance with issues concerning student transition.  The School Liaison Officer acts as a communication link between the installation and the surrounding schools.  Your Installation School Liaison Officer is available to represent you at any level if you need assistance.

SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICER — RESPONSIBILITIES

School Liaison Officers (SLO) are the Navy's subject matter experts for K-12 Education issues. SLO's work to connect commanders, educators, and parents. There are seven core components of this program:

1. School Transition Support (PCS Cycle) - To help ease the transfer of military children from school system to school system.

2. Deployment Support (20%) - Prepare students, parents, schools and Navy leaders to respond to PCS and deployment issues impacting school-age children.

3. Special Education System Navigation - Provide useful and accurate info by building and updating the network of school contacts and military resources.

4. Communications (20%) - Inform and advise commanders and parents on student education issues.

5. Partnerships In Education (PIE) - Work with installation and community partners to expand services to children/youth and help them succeed in school and community life.

How are military commands providing support in schools? Service members are volunteering in local schools by mentoring, reading to classes, assisting with various school events like family fun nights. If your command would like to volunteer in school, contact the School Liaison Officer. The ways to volunteer are endless.

6. Home School Support - Provide information and offer services that support the needs of homeschoolers (e.g., Technology Labs, Youth Homework Centers, Fine Arts, Physical Education).

7. Post-Secondary Preparation - Assist in preparing youth for the transition from high school to work/college.

8. Navy Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM)

Where can I find student opportunities? STEM development begins with Naval STEM outreach programs at the Pre-K through 12th grade levels, continues through undergraduate and graduate school, supports student advancement into post-doctoral work, and continues through all stages of their STEM professions. The list of opportunities for high school, undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students can be found below and by downloading the Naval STEM Opportunities for Students handout.
