YOUTH SUMMER CAMPS

NAS Oceana offers two fully developed recreation summer camps to accommodate eligible family members during summer break, mid-June to late August. Summer camps are open to eligible family members six to 12 years of age and five-year-olds that have graduated kindergarten and are going to the first grade. Camps offer a variety of age-appropriate activities that enhance cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. Activities include Boy’s and Girl’s Club programming, 4-H programming, swimming, bowling, golf, field trips, and much more. As summer break approaches spaces will fill up quickly, so don’t wait to register!

YOUTH SPORTS

The youth sports program teaches the value of exercise, healthy living, competition, team building, and group dynamics; signing up for youth sports is a great way to get your child involved. Kids have more fun when exercising with a group of friends or teammates. Studies show that children that receive the appropriate amount of exercise are not only healthier but also better able to focus on their schoolwork. Don’t let your child become a part of the American obesity epidemic. A healthy child is a happy child. The values learned from youth sports can benefit your child for a lifetime.  The sports program at NAS Oceana includes soccer, flag football, basketball, cheerleading, and baseball.  In 2015-2016 we look to expand this program to include a fitness facility designed for youth, ages 6-12, participating in our programs.

TEEN PROGRAM

The NAS Oceana teen program builds character through everyday leadership and guidance in behavior and attitude. Young people of all backgrounds join together in wholesome recreation and companionship. Our professional staff provides positive adult mentors and role models to help teens succeed in school, stay healthy, learn important life skills, pursue interests in arts and sports, and explore vocational choices. Most importantly our teen program shows youngsters that someone cares and wants them to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

SCHOOL AGE CARE

As a parent, having a safe place for your children to go before and after school, provides you with peace of mind to fulfill career, school, or volunteer responsibilities. Our School-Age Care (SAC) programs are designed to do just that. This highly structured recreational and educational program provides youth with age-appropriate before and after-school activities, as well as holiday and summer day camps for youth ages five years (and enrolled in kindergarten) – 12 years of age.

The Council on Accreditation accredits our programs and certified annually by the Commander, Navy Installation Command (CNIC), and Department of the Navy (DoN). Our staff members receive the extensive training required for providing the highest quality out-of-school experience. Child & Youth Programs (CYP) is an active partner with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the 4-H Youth Development Organization.

If you would like to enroll your child, you must first go online to Military Child Care (MCC) at militarychildcare.com. Once on the waitlist, you will be contacted as soon as space becomes available. Fees are based on total family income.

HOURLY CARE

The Navy hourly care program is designed to support families’ need for short-term, intermittent childcare. Hourly childcare is available to eligible patrons to include:  active duty military, reservists, DoD civilians, and DoD contractors.

Reservations can be made up to 30 days in advance. Space is limited and reservations are taken on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Drop-in care will be available on a space-available basis only.

Before using this service, please complete an information packet, including:

  •  Registration Form
  •  Health Forms / Family Profile Sheet
  •  Hourly Agreement Form
  •  Copy of Immunization Records (required if not in public schools)
  •  Medical Forms (if a child has allergies or requires medications)

Forms are available at all locations. Submit your packet to the location where you would like to receive care. Hourly care is $4/hour/child.

YOUTH SPORTS

The Youth Sports program at NSA Oceana and Dam Neck Annex is a recreational program focused on participation and the development of a passion for active lifestyles. Three and four-year-olds participate in a Start Smart parent participation program that teaches the motor skills required for future sports participation. All other sports participants can look forward to leagues, camps, clinics, special events, and clubs. All sports activities work on teamwork, sportsmanship, and skill development while focusing on having fun in an atmosphere of encouragement and inclusion.

It’s also important to know what our program is not. It’s not a competitive league. We are not a training ground for high school or stateside travel teams. We are not a program that wants to know who’s the best – we want each of our kids to play, have fun, and make sports an ongoing, positive experience in their lives.

Programs offered are throughout the year in both traditional and non-traditional sports. The Youth Sports program is always looking for volunteer coaches as well.

Some current sports include:

  • Track
  • Basketball
  •  Flag Football
  • Soccer
  • Cheerleading
  • Baseball

Also, our newest facility, The All Sports Zone, offers a wide range of activities to include batting cages, indoor put-put, basketball, 3d Golf, pool tables, workout equipment, and more. This facility is located on NAS Oceana in building 531.

TEEN PROGRAM

Our teen center is open to eligible family members of active duty, retirees, DoD civilians, and DoD contractors. After becoming a member of our program, youth ages 13-18 (And Still in School) can participate in teen-driven activities that focus and contribute to the community which increases goal setting for their future

  • Community/ Volunteer Service
  • Fundraising

MWR CYP involves 100% teen input, where their feedback is important for future events. We also have lots of cool events for teens right here at our center, like movie days, running club, hiking excursions, host ice-cream socials, and have Nerf wars…

Memberships for our program is free and registration is taken directly at the facility. Some fees will apply for field trips and special events.

School Age Care – NAS Oceana/ Dam neck

School-Age Care (SAC) programs provide quality “out of school” activities for children who have started kindergarten to 12 years of age. The programs are designed to enhance rather than duplicate the school day, are affiliated with Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), and offer 4-H programs. Scheduled developmentally appropriate activities in core program areas and technology are planned based on knowledge of youth development and the needs and interests of the children enrolled. Navy SAC programs are DoD certified and nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA).

Child Development Homes – NAS Oceana

When you need professional care in the comfort of your home, our Child Development Homes (CDH) are here to help. CDH Providers are self-employed individuals operating a child care business in their own home and often have previous early childhood education experience. They undergo regular inspections and receive ongoing programming support and extensive training – exactly like our Child Development Centers. They’re here to promote overall social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth – all while building school readiness skills.

TYPE OF CARE PROVIDED

CDHs offer a variety of flexible child care options to support the unique needs of Navy families.

  • Full- or part-time care for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years
  • Emergency care (emergency deployment, natural disasters, etc.)
  • Respite care
  • Hourly care
  • Extended hours, including nights and weekends

CDH Providers offer a variety of care and services depending on the needs of the installation.

Parent fees may be based on the Navy’s fee policy and sliding scale, or you may decide to enter a private pay agreement with the Provider and negotiate your fee. Check with your local CYP to find out which option is available.

CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT

CDH Providers are trained on developmentally appropriate practices and required to use a developmentally appropriate curriculum. In addition, we support Providers’ professional growth and development through ongoing assessments and quality improvement plans.

ACCREDITATION & CERTIFICATION

CDH Providers must demonstrate annually that they meet all of the Navy certification requirements before they are approved to operate a CDH.

All certified CDH Providers are eligible and encouraged to obtain accreditation through the National Association for Family Child Care.
