Employment

It’s likely that employment will change when a move occurs, especially for military spouses. The information below will provide you with employment assistance information and resources available such as SECO, MyCAA, and MSEP Portals.

Employment Opportunities

For current employment vacancies, business opportunities, and self-employment information, contact the Scott Airman and Family Readiness Center staff as soon as you are notified of the assignment. Attend workshops and individual appointments related to resume preparation, job searching, interviewing, etc. You may want to request an appointment with the SA&FRC to have your resume reviewed as you begin your job search. Upon arrival at Scott Air Force Base, visit the SA&FRC for the latest job information and attend our Spouse Employment Orientation. Individual appointments are also available. The SA&FRC will assist you in establishing career goals and objectives, training and education information, developing and refining resumes and interviewing skills, and direct you to job leads and resources. The SA&FRC has a website for transitioning service members and spouses to assist them in finding employment. Visit the SA&FRC website, or the Facebook page, for information on available job opportunities and related employment information.

Local Economic Climate

Employment opportunities mirror the national average in St. Louis and the Metro East area. The area's average unemployment rate for St. Clair County is 4%. The region's main industries include aviation, biotechnology, chemicals, electrical utilities, food, and beverage manufacturing, refining, research, telecommunications, and transportation. St. Louis has a higher-than-average concentration of jobs in fields such as computer systems analysis, hardware engineering, software applications engineering, medicine, and industrial chemicals. Hospitality is St. Louis' second-largest industry.

To apply for Air Force civil service positions, visit USAJOBS. SA&FRC staff is also available to assist with understanding the federal application process. The SA&FRC offers a monthly federal employment workshop. Employees of non-appropriated fund activities are hired through the NAF Human Resources office located in Building P-10, room B107, on Heritage Drive. This is the same building as Finance and Military Personnel. Customer service hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. You may reach them by calling 618-256-3831 or by visiting the NAF website.

Other sources of information are the job service offices of the Illinois Department of Employment Security and various private employment agencies listed in the yellow pages of the telephone directory.

Volunteer positions are available through the American Red Cross and SA&FRC.

Spouses seeking employment can contact the SA&FRC for local employment information and resume assistance. In addition, the Discovery Center, located inside the SA&FRC, is available from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offers computer access, local job information, a scanner, fax, and a copier to aid in your employment search.
