New Parent Support Program

You may be expecting your first baby or busy with a toddler. That probably means you have your hands full and may have questions. Thankfully, help is at hand.

The New Parent Support Program is a free service that helps military parents, including expectant parents, transition successfully into parenthood and provides a nurturing environment for their children. Services vary but may include home visits, parenting classes, playgroups, or prenatal classes.

General Program Description

The New Parent Support Program is a team made up of nurses, social workers and home visitation specialists who offer support and guidance by helping parents:

  • Build strong, healthy bonds with their infants and toddlers that will lay the foundation for their social and emotional development
  • Manage the demands of parenting, especially when impacted by deployments and other military operations
  • Remain flexible and responsive when navigating daily life
  • Build a strong support network
  • Respond to infant and toddler behavior sensitively and be attuned to their developmental needs
  • Find services in the local community in a time of need

Staff Qualifications

New Parent Support Program staff are child development professionals, including registered nurses, clinical social workers, and para-professionals trained in the delivery and practice of established home visiting models. The program is supervised and monitored at the installation level by the Family Advocacy program manager.

Eligibility

The program is available to military families who are expecting a baby or have children age 3 or younger. Marine Corps eligibility includes families with at least one child under 5.

Other

The New Parent Support Program is a voluntary program designed to build healthy communities and enhance mission readiness. This prevention program works with pregnant spouses and/or with parents of children from birth to 3 years old. Eligibility requirements for participation include:

One of the parents is eligible for military medical care* and one of the following categories is met:

  • The family has a child younger than 3 years old or the spouse is pregnant.
  • Individuals and/or couples are anticipating marriage that will create a new family with children younger than 3 years.
  • Individuals/couples are anticipating the adoption of a child younger than age 3.

*Families of retired sponsors may receive services on a space-available basis.

Counseling: Individual, marital, family, or couples short- to long-term counseling available. Counseling sessions are confidential and are not reportable to command nor annotated in the outpatient medical record.

Breast-feeding classes: Classes are held during the months of January, March, May, July, September, and November, 1-6 p.m., in the Clinic Conference Room.

Pregnancy 101: A class for expecting parents is held every month from 9 a.m.-noon in the Clinic Conference Room. Information and resources are provided on prenatal care, nutrition, exercise, breastfeeding, Tricare coverage, and much more (mandatory for active-duty expectant mothers).

Home visits: By request, a licensed registered nurse will visit and answer parents’ questions and lend support.

Anger awareness class: Learn new techniques for decreasing your anger to a level where you are controlling your anger instead of your anger controlling you. This is a two-hour, six-session class, held on Wednesdays 1-3 p.m. Call the Family Advocacy Program at 530-634-3423 to find out when the next session begins.

Dads 101A training program designed for new and expectant fathers, it provides important skills you need to be an effective dad. Topics include diapering, feeding, holding, etc. This class is offered quarterly; call to sign up.

Newborn care/infant CPR class: New and expecting parents are invited to attend. This is a non-certification class. Contact the Family Advocacy Program at 530-634-3424 for details and dates.
