The Airman & Family Readiness Center is here to assist Service Members and Spouses during your transition from the military to civilian life. 

Effective 21 November 2012, Public Law 101-510, H.R. 2433 and Executive Order 13518 mandates all separating or retiring service members complete newly established components of the Transition Assistance Program in addition to Pre-Separation Counseling, DD 2648/-1. It is mandatory that separating/retiring members contact the Airman and Family Readiness Center at 707-424-2486 to ensure requirements are completed, according to established timelines, prior to the date of separation.

Step   One:  TAP Initial  Counseling
For those who are separating/retiring, you MUST make an INITIAL COUNSELING appointment immediately for your transition.
*MANDATORY* You MUST make an Initial Counseling appointment before scheduling all other transition classes. 


  1. Fill out the below documents: Statement of Understanding (SOU), ITP, Transition Assistance Self-Assessment Worksheet and complete the additional tasks on the Initial Counseling step-by-step PowerPoint Guide (checklist can be found on pg 2 & 22 on the step by step guide below).  Save these items on your desktop.   2. Email the TAP Team at [email protected]   (do not send your documents until a TAP counselor contacts you)

  3. Ask for an INITIAL COUNSELING appointment.  Share your professional and personal contact information, DoS, terminal leave date, nature of separation status and Travis AFB Squadron, and any other pertinent information) mention that you have completed all the actions and documents (approx 8-9 items) per the Initial Counseling step-by-step PowerPoint guide (checklist can be found on pg 2 & 22 on the step-by-step guide below).

  4. You will be assigned a TAP Counselor who will send you an official email address for you to send all the documents/tasks.   If you fail to send the documents within 30 days you may need to request a new counselor due to availability.

  5. Within three business days of receiving your deliverables at his/her official email address, your counselor will offer you an appointment to meet one-on-one.  During your Initial Counseling session, you will discuss the next steps and sign up for the mandated classes.

Step Two:   Pre-Separation Briefing 

 Like the initial counseling, the pre-separation briefing is also due no less than a year before service members plan to officially leave the military. This is a workshop packed with information about available benefits and transition help. We also have TRICARE, TMO, and SBP briefers attend as well as other agencies that are here to help our transitioning members and their spouses know about the available resources.  Your TAP Counselor will register you for this briefing.

 2022 Pre-Separation Agenda 

Step Three: Transition Assistance  Program Workshop---   3+2 (5  Day)

This workshop consists of A&FRC, VA, and the Department of Labor. The A&FRC discusses how transitioning service members and their spouses, shift their lives from being centered on the military to being focused on the civilian world. This day focuses on resilience building, learning how to manage their own transition, translating their military occupational specialty into a civilian career, and the impact on their taxable income, and creating a financial plan for post-transition. The Department of Veterans Affairs will have a day full of the knowledge of resources and the last day is a 1-day workshop that provides an introduction to the essential tools and resources needed to evaluate career options, gain information for civilian employment, and understand the fundamentals of the employment process.

Step Four: Capstone

After the TAP courses and briefing days, a final TAP capstone appointment with the transition counselor will certify that all of the transition actions meet the Pentagon's list of career readiness standards (CRS). The capstone is the final piece of the TAP process and, in most cases, must be completed no less than 90 days before the final out date. Once all items are completed, please send an email to our Gmail account.  Put "ATTN CAPSTONE" and in the body of the email provide your final out the date, your TAP counselor's name, and a phone number to contact you.  Send your CC and First Sgt's official email addresses to your TAP Counselor when an appointment is made. This information will be used for your final appointment with a TAP Counselor.

Extra Training    Tracks

     Transitioning Service members will have the option of selecting one or more two-day individual Training Tracks aligned with their personal goals: Department of Labor Employment, Accessing Higher Education, Career Exploration & Planning, and Entrepreneurship Tracks.

SBA "Boots to Business" Entrepreneurship Track

Service members pursuing self-employment in the private or non-profit sectors will receive information related to the benefits and challenges of entrepreneurship and the steps required for business owners through the SBA "Boots to Business," Entrepreneurship Track. Once Service members have completed the Entrepreneurship Track, they will have developed the initial components of a business feasibility plan. Additionally, they will be given the opportunity to enroll in an optional eight-week online entrepreneurship course, which helps them complete a business plan and connects them with a successful business mentor to assist Service members with the business start-up process.

Accessing Higher Education Track

The Accessing Higher Education track is for those pursuing higher education. It assists Service members in identifying the education requirements that support their personal goals. This track focuses on topics such as how to achieve academic success, how to research and compare institutions, and how to finance higher education. After completing the Accessing Higher Education Track, Service members will be prepared to complete an application to an accredited institution, schedule a session with a counselor from an academic institution, or meet individually with education counselors, as needed.

Career Exploration and Planning Track

This two-day workshop is centered on career exploration and development.  Service members take two excellent online assessments to discover their career interests and aptitudes (natural skills/talents).  Students then get detailed reports of recommended careers that match both their interests and natural abilities. They also receive guidance on how to interpret their reports and several tools to develop an individual career plan.

During the workshop, students explore:

  • Individual skills and interests that relate to their career growth

  • Labor market conditions, including high demand occupations

  • Expected salary ranges at each career level

  • Career preparation programs (licensing or certification programs, technical schools, community colleges, apprenticeships, internships, etc.)

  • Available funding options

The workshop facilitator will provide one-on-one career guidance to each student during the workshop.  This is an excellent opportunity for:

  • Those who are unsure what they will do after transition

  • Those who would like to make sure their current career plan is a good fit

  • Anyone who just wants to explore more career options.

  • Spouses are welcome **as well as dependent high school students (on off-school days).
